“For a Region like ours that aims to be competitive by focusing particularly on the quality and uniqueness of its agriculture, the organic sector is strategic. This is why from now until 2020 we want to double the organic land surfaces in Emilia Romagna”. This was the comment made by the regional councillor for agriculture for Emilia Romagna, Simona Caselli who participated in the “Festa del Bio” (Organic Festival) at Expo Milano, an initiative of the Ministry of Agricultural Policies organised by Bologna Fiere and held in the Biodiversity Park.

Agriculture that is good for everyone

“Organic agriculture is good for the environment and for everyone’s health – explained Caselli - but it can also play an important economic role, as the growth of organic products even during these years of crisis has shown. Today in Emilia Romagna we already allocate 30% of our rural development resources to the sector. With the new plan, we want to continue in this direction, assigning priority on all fronts to those who practice organic agriculture. These are young, very motivated farmers who invest in and place their bets on the future: they are therefore a resource we must promote for the good of our agriculture”.

Top of the crop in Italy

In 2014 Emilia Romagna was the top region in Italy for companies that process and/or sell organic products, with a growth rate of 8.6%. Instead, it occupies fifth place in the rankings of regions with the most organic agriculture companies, boasting a total agricultural surface area of 85,000 hectares (8% of the total).
