Salvatore Ceccarelli

For many years the Italian scientist Salvatore Ceccarelli has focused his research on the development of the world’s most impoverished agricultural areas and on small farmers in countries ravaged by war. The non-profit organisation Northwest Atlantic Marine Alliance was founded by fishermen from the coastal areas of Maine, in the north-east of the United States, to promote the marine system as a common good of the planet. They are the joint winners of the first edition of the Bologna Award, an International Sustainability and Food Award for agri-food sustainability that was devised and promoted by CAAB (Centro Agroalimentare di Bologna) along with the Municipality of Bologna and the Emilia-Romagna Region.

The award ceremony at Expo

The award ceremony of the Bologna Award 2015 is due to be held on Wednesday 23 September at Expo Milan 2015 during the Week of Protagonism of the Emilia Romagna Region. “It will be an opportunity to really promote the aims of the International Bologna Award –explains the chairman of the CAAB and Jury of the Bologna Award, Andrea Segrè -In Bologna, the City of Food, which will soon also host the FICO Eataly World Agri-Food Park, we were really in favour of this biennial award which, starting from 2015, the year of Expo, will support scientific and technological research on the theme of agri-food sustainability”.
The regional councillor Palma Costi explained that “the Award is part of a wider strategy for the Emilia-Romagna Region, which is to hold the World Food research and innovation Forum on 22 and 23 September: it is a project that was created to activate - in Emilia-Romagna in Italy and in the European Union – an international platform linked to research and safety in the food sector that is to become a catalyst for the competitiveness of companies and national and European production chains in global markets”.

City of food

In Bologna the City of Food project has also been operational for more than a year. This is a venture involving numerous players in order to promote the agri-food heritage of the city of Bologna both in Italy and abroad as a key feature of the city and a fundamental component in territorial marketing and tourism operations.

The sharing model

Both Salvatore Ceccarelli and NAMA operate through the principle of sharing and seek to create development models through a shared approach with local communities - with the former working with farmers and the latter with fishermen. The notion of a Common Good within the local communities must form the basis of sustainable development that subsequently involves consumers. Both recipients of the award also work to maintain biodiversity – another fundamental principle in sustainable and durable development.
