Fico Eataly-World, in Emilia-Romagna the legacy of Expo 2015

President of the Region, Stefano Bonaccini, at the presentation of the Fabbrica Contadina (Farming Factory) to be set up at the Caab in Bologna: we are a leading region in the agro-food sector, and Fico could only ever be established here

Emilia-Romagna is one of the leading territories in the European agro-food sector and one of the symbols of Italian production in the world. It is home to world-famous marks such as Parmigiano Reggiano and Prosciutto di Parma and hosts large brands of the food industry that compete on international markets.

Emilia-Romagna, and more specifically Bologna, will play host to the Fico Eataly World, the Italian Farming Factory, details of which were presented at Expo by the promoter Oscar Farinetti, together with others, including the Minister of Agriculture, Maurizio Martina, the president of the Emilia-Romagna Region, Stefano Bonaccini, and the mayor of Bologna, Virginio Merola.

A great opportunity for Emilia Romagna

“A strong connection with the land, a high degree of specialisation, a close focus on innovation, research and environmental sustainability – stresses the president of the Region, Stefano Bonaccini – are the characteristics that distinguish the agro-food industry of Emilia Romagna, together with the choice of quality as a fundamental competitive factor, throughout the production and supply chain. A project like Fico could only be created in this region. I am sure that the period following Expo will provide another important opportunity for raising the world’s awareness about, and promoting the excellence of, our agriculture and our food industry”.

A great new adventure

President Bonaccini reminded those present of the winning bet placed by the Emilia-Romagna Region on Expo: “We have always believed in it, and we doubled our investment when we went on site. The results now prove that we were right”. The Region has worked long and hard on the themes of Expo, creating the World Food Forum, which will survive after the event ends. The theme of food safety is the focus of the partnership agreement signed with Guangdong, a Chinese province with 107 million inhabitants. Now the commitment continues for Fico: “It will be a great new adventure”, said Bonaccini pledging the Region’s support for the project.

For Bonaccini, Fico will help boost tourism and the export of fine food and wine products made in Emilia-Romagna.

Land of PDO and PGI

Forty-one PDO and PGI products are made in the area from Rimini to Piacenza: a record in Italy and Europe. Products with a designated geographical origin from Emilia Romagna account for over 40% of the national total. The top four PDO and PGI products from the region are: Parmigiano Reggiano PDO (19% of the total regional turnover), Prosciutto di Parma PDO (11%), Balsamic Vinegar of Modena PGI (6%), Mortadella Bologna PGI (4%).

A sector worth 20 billion

Registering 20 billion euro in turnover, the agro-food sector of Emilia Romagna accounts for 15% of the total national income and is the second top manufacturing industry in the region. Its 70,000 employees account for 18% of the national total, but if we also consider the related segments (such as those of the processing, catering, distribution and machinery and equipment manufacturing sectors), the industry effectively provides work for approximately 300,000 people.

The world loves products made in Emilia Romagna

The tendency to export products is high, totalling 5.5 billion euro, for a share of approximately 16% of the national total and it is a growing trend, as the data relative to the first half of 2015 confirm, with an increase of 4.5%. The main export markets are in Europe (Germany, France, UK) but the USA market is growing, and now 7% of products are exported to the States.

Co-operation

The importance of the cooperatives in the production sector is relevant: indeed, the 778 cooperatives present in Emilia-Romagna produce 60% of the total income and account for a third of the cooperative companies in the Italian agro-food sector. On the other hand, the organization is another of the aspects that best characterises the agro-food segment in Emilia-Romagna, which relies on 52 Producers’ Organisations with thousands of members. The agriculture of Emilia-Romagna is highly suitable and specialised. In 2014, the value of the agricultural production was 6.8 billion euro with an added value of 3.4 billion euro. 65,000 employees work in the sector.

The record-breaking organic sector

Organic agriculture is one of the “record-holders” of the agro-food sector in Emilia Romagna, placing the region at fifth place in the rankings in Italy and first place in North Italy for the total number of companies present: no less than 3,876, a figure which has increased by 2.8%. Instead, Emilia-Romagna is the top region in Italy if we only consider the companies that process and sell organic products: 867 with an increase of 8.6%. Organic production, together with combined production (another strong point of the agriculture of Emilia-Romagna) is performed in over 200,000 hectares of land.
