Stefano Bonaccini: "Emilia-Romagna, a region of excellences"

Emilia-Romagna Regional President Stefano Bonaccini

The issues proposed by the 2015 Universal Exposition in Milan and the visibility the event as a whole is expected to benefit from, allow the promotion of multiple aspects of the economy and culture of Emilia-Romagna, including: agriculture and the industrial processing of products, technological development related to these areas, environmental sustainability and cultural development of the region.

Expo will be a particularly prestigious showcase, also for the promotion of tourism and culture and to support the international projection of the regional production and exhibition system. At Expo Milano 2015, which must therefore be the great event that helps raise awareness of Emilia-Romagna as the world's food capital, the Region has chosen to focus attention on the issue of food safety, meaning the ability of the regional agro-industrial system to ensure the value of the food produced and consumed through a complex long-term strategy.

An integrated system of laws and regulations, controls, research, innovation, technology, training, production, processing and distribution methods that place the consumer at the centre of every decision. The system is such as to ensure the distinctiveness, health, environmental sustainability and quality of all food produced in Emilia-Romagna, from the raw materials grown to its artisan and industrial processing, from storage, packaging and transport to placing on the market. This strategic plan will be presented at Expo Milano 2015 as the contribution of Emilia-Romagna to the solution of global problems and made available to humanity with the aim of satisfying the requirements and needs of man in a sustainable manner, maximising the result and minimising the use of natural resources.

For this purpose the slogan "Food for Life Food for Mind" has been coined, which refers not only to the availability and quality of its production, but also reminds us that the theme of food has through the centuries sedimented in our region as a continuous cultural challenge, involving habits, tastes, education, research and innovation through a process of continuous enrichment. To achieve these objectives we have tried to bring Emilia-Romagna to Expo but also Expo to Emilia-Romagna through various initiatives and projects.

In Milan, we will be particularly present, promoting the excellences of our region in the Piazzetta on the Cardo from 1 August to 31 October where 30 quality projects related to the themes of Expo will take turns, and presenting a series of cultural and scientific initiatives during the week as protagonists from 18 to 24 September 2015 in the Italian Pavilion. These will include, in particular, the "World Food&Innovation Forum" which has the objective of building in Emilia-Romagna, for Italy and the Union European, a permanent consolidated international platform, the true legacy beyond Expo which, starting from research in the food sector in its broadest sense and food safety, represents a strategic asset for the competitiveness of companies and supply chains in global markets.

In Emilia-Romagna we have, on the other hand, focused on two important strategic and especially international incoming projects. Firstly, for the development of our region from the tourism point of view, through the new "Via Emilia - Experience the Italian lifestyle" brand, where the ancient Roman road with over 2200 years of history becomes the leitmotiv to unite and communicate the excellences of Emilia Romagna. But also for the promotion of our manufacturing and science and technology fabric with the "Company Open Days - Demo Farms & Demo Factories" programme addressed to buyers, journalists and researchers from the world's major markets for guided tours inside the more than 600 companies that have adhered and that represent all the supply chains of excellence in our region.

Expo Milano 2015 A unique opportunity that must allow us to present our main skills to an audience which has never been so vast: knowing how to do and doing together, knowing how to constantly innovate, being open to the entire world, both for the opportunities it represents as well as in order to contribute to the solution of the problems.

These are major challenges. But they are also challenges we cannot renounce if we really want to build quality development, which is fully sustainable, not only from an environmental but, I would like to emphasise, also from a social point of view. So let's get ready for Expo, but looking beyond Expo and working together - institutions, manufacturing world and social forces - for fair development.
