The skills and know-how of Italy's leading seed industry, concentrated in the region of Emilia Romagna, are a point of reference as far afield as China. A meeting between a delegation of seed companies from Emilia Romagna and one from China, along with a number of Chinese officials, was held at the China pavilion of Expo Milano, at the behest of the Emilia Romagna Regional Authorities.

Food safety

The meeting, which centred on the use of information technology to support food safety and on the development of the Chinese seed industry, provided greater mutual understanding, and in particular provided the opportunity to discuss regulatory barriers to free trade, paving the way to overcoming them. "Emilia Romagna," said the Councillor for Agriculture, Simona Caselli, "is Italy's leading region in terms of seed production, achieving levels of excellence in crops with the highest added value, such as vegetables and sugar beet."

Cooperation

The delegations are committed to following the planned implementation of control and certification activities and the Chinese regulations, and to jointly discussing any critical issues.  Emilia Romagna's seed industry has reached advanced levels due highly professional farmers, cutting-edge enterprises, specific regional laws, and a network of services supporting the sector, such as producer organisations, testing laboratories, and research/certification bodies.

In figures

The regional gross saleable production of seeds exceeds €120m, for about 46,000 hectares of land and 73 seed companies, accounting for about one third of the national total.
